How are bamboo sunglasses made?

Right now, one of the biggest trends in fashion is the use of eco-friendly, sustainable materials. This is just one of the reasons why here at Bamboo Sunnies we only supply sunglasses made from 100% genuine bamboo materials. We are passionate about the environment and are keen to promote the use of environmentally friendly materials for use in accessories. Our natural wooden frames not only look great but are also lightweight and incredibly comfortable.

Making Bamboo Sunglasses

For those of you who are interested in how our bamboo sunglasses are made, we thought we would share a little information on the creation process.

Each pair of sunglasses is like a small piece of art - carefully sourced and finely crafted from the highest quality natural bamboo materials. Bamboo is the ideal material for sunglasses as it is 100% biodegradable. It also happens to be one of the most sustainable resources on the planet. Unlike plastics and other synthetics bamboo also requires far fewer chemicals to be used in the manufacturing process making it a much eco-friendlier option.

Here's a great picture summary. Read on below...

Sourcing the Bamboo

Bamboo has to be carefully sourced when used in the creation of sunglasses as there are many different types of bamboo plants each with their own unique properties. Manufacturers have to look for the best and right kind of bamboo in order to create the highest quality sunglasses.

The Crafting of Bamboo Sunglasses

The first step in the creation process is to design frames for the sunglasses. Shape, size and compability with the lenses are all very important elements of the design process.  Sometimes designers may draw around the lenses first to get an idea of the size and scale of frames needed. CAD programs can also be used in order to create a computer-generated image of the finished sunglasses. This enables designers to get a more accurate picture of the exact shape and dimensions required.

Cutting the Wood to Shape

The wood is then cut to the right dimensions using either a scroll saw or laser cutter before the lenses are inserted into place. A small rim is often made at this stage to ensure the lenses are placed correctly. Some wooden frames can also be shaped under pressure in order to achieve that natural bend which allows them to fit the face better. Finally, the frames are sanded down before being polished/laminated. In order to achieve an extra smooth and glossy look a finish cover is often applied to the wood.
